I tried a couple of PC racing games once.  F1 2010 and the other one I don't recall the name.

While the graphics were great, and the physics were decent...  what killed all enjoyment of them for me was the horrible AI computer opponents.   Funny enough the AI cars never seemed to run into each other, but always drove into me.  They always seem to follow a set racing line whether the player car is there or not.

In F1 2010 I remember I tried running a full length race simulation at Spa once. (including qualy)  I qualified and started mid pack but after about 10 laps I settled into a groove and began to gain on those in front.  After several laps of closing down the next car up the road I got close enough to get a tow down the long straight, pulled alongside on the inside line into Les Combes, had my front wheels well in front of his, hit my braking perfectly... and he turns in and crashes me.    I limp back to the pits for repairs and a new set of tires and get back out.  Now of course I'm the back of the field but much faster than those immediately in front of me, I quickly catch one and try to pass on the inside at the chicane... and he blindly turns into my rear end and crashes me again.

As an F1 fan, I tried to get into that game for several weeks, but every time I'd start to get into it, some silly AI car would stupidly crash into me...    it's like every AI car was Romain Grosjean 2012.   It was the same story with the other racing game I tried, I think it was Need for Speed, but I can't recall for sure.

AZi is always a problem in race games. Either to passive or aggressive and following a set path. I'm interested to see how Forza 5 is not going to use AI as in the past but AI based on player data collected on the cloud. Could be really bad or good lol, depends on how people race. I

Well my L-Tech is here but I have to wait to use it. My basement is tore up due to a flood and this week end I have to take apart my puter and everything for wall board and carpet. I guess it will be a week or two until i can start my new passion. This looks like a really cool thing to get into to. The G27 looks very awsome.

I think the best feature I've seen in a racing game is from Codemasters (Grid, Dirt series). If you make a mistake, you can press a button and "rewind" back a set amount of time. It's super helpful AND if you feel like messing around, you use this to crash as many cars as possible in that one situation, then re do it all over.  :devil

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

Widow is the Mod also an online/multiplayer game? I finally got it to install, on the STEAM version, even tho I got error messages but cant find any online servers.

Also Im tempted to buy Grid-2 but it doesnt have drivers view. WTF is that about?

According to the devs, it's so that they can put more resources on the car and environment, and they mentioned that according to polls, not a lot of people used cockpit view (which is BS). However, there's already a mod for cockpit view, and everything else in the game is fun. The first Grid is probably my favorite racing game, graphics are still pretty good for today's standards. Still worth a buy.

I do not beleive player-based AI will be an improvement.
The couple years in GPL and Nascar racing online proved conclusively that the guy behind will invariably crash the guy in front
.. either rushing the inside apex with no hope of braking in time to avoid the crash
..or just blindly driving right into the back of the car in front of him on any part of a race track.

Too many replays proved it.
Even the self-styled 'real race car drivers' that showed up now an then.
Some of them were the worst.

A little update. Im downloading IRacing as we speak. For $15 for 3 months it was to good a deal to pass up. I have a lot of learning to do and its not that good a time for it. After a flood my game time is kinda limited. But Im looking forward to this new genre and am excited by it. I was in some hair raising chases earlier in life. It will be fun to recreate it in a game. I really like competing against other people in my game time.

The graphics in Grid-2 look awesome. Racing around in all those different cities is to cool for school. After I get situated in Iracing and GTR I'll look into buying it. I had no idea this genre was so huge. Its seems much larger then flight.

It is multiplayer sim, yes. I have an old CD-based version so can't comment on the steam version except that people have used it succesfully.

Advice on installing P&G with Steam version of the GTR2:

i hope you have a lot of patience and tylenol...going through the rookie and d stage is tough. full of grievers who don't care. start out by just focusing on running a safe race (no incidents), run a lot of practice laps to get used to the track and car, watch ahead and immediately behind you (that's where most of the problems occur). learn to be smooth with your acceration and braking. don't get drawn into the drama queen's reactions for their own stupidity on the tracks.

i'm taking a break from it. i'll get back into it around august or september.

After Motor City Online (MCO) was killed off by EA, a couple of friends and I did the MCOMOD for it, used the F1-99 series as the base.  That was a blast to play.  I had the pleasure of doing the physics model for the mod.
You can go into the F1 series, modify the AI to make them far more aggressive and independent.  I ended up making a single AI program for each car, so it wasn't simply an across the board AI difficulty, each car used the same physics model as the cars we drove.  It was wild.  Ran it for quite a while before it became non stop work and no time to play.
I still enjoy the F1 series simply because I can tweak the AIs.  I like to ramp them up so I rarely win, as opposed to dumbing them down so I never lose :)
Flat out is another one I really enjoyed modding.
Did iRacing for about a year, it was ok, but never really got me hooked. To each his own, really nice game but it never brought me in.
Formosa, now that one looks inviting, going to check that out.

Nothing clever here.  Please, move along.

I got up and driving in Iracing yesterday. It was pretty immersive and fun. Tho I have a lot of practice to do before actually competing.

Yeah, it's demanding sim that requires a lot of time to get well.  Learning track and your car will take a long time...not a quick get few laps and get out.

F1 2011 is the better of the Codemaster's series. They got lazy and took out a lot of depth in 2012
