B29s are tough II - 14 hits with 30mm and it flew away
« on: June 02, 2013, 09:47:22 AM »
screenshots of 109K4 attack on a B29 that took a lot of damage and flew away. Much later got a kill message but don't know what happened, maybe crashed while landing.

It looks like most of the 30mms hit in the fuselage. In every bomber the fuselage will eat up a ton of damage. Had those hits been focused on a weaker part of the plane like the wing it might have killed him, but B-29's are seriously tough!

Although the main body is larger, I prefer going for wing tanks, and wing roots. Btw you lucky dog!
Everytime I get within 500yards of a b29 I get lit up.   :bhead

I don't know how other people manage to focus fire on any one area long enough to do serious damage. Every time I do that my plane is disabled or blown up, mostly blown up.

This is the only way I can attack B29s alone and have any chance of surviving. In slashing moves that only allow for short bursts of fire.

Even when attacking with others they get shot down so fast the gunner is on me before I can get many shots off.

If in a 262 or 163 and low on perks I just fly away and don't even bother to try.

Someone should tell my B-29s they aren't supposed to fall apart just because an enemy looked at them with hungry eyes...  :noid

No joke though, if the pilot burned off the main fuel tank first those things are going to take a lot of abuse. Wing tanks won't catch fire so a chance of an easy kill in that respect is out the window. A 110 or a 410 would be the best plane to use to kill it.

I don't get the chance to attack B-29s very often (when I do, the gunner is usually killing me from 1k out) but having taken a lot of damage in them I can give you a few tips on bringing them down. In a nutshell, the engines. Take out just one of them and you've made it an easier target. At high alts (above 25k) he will loose alt fast and won't be able to regain it. He will also be much slower for you to make better passes on. If you hit both engines on one wing, he will either have to bail to the drones or stay in the pilot seat just to keep the plane straight.

Not quite true. Usually (and I mean who can explain half the mysteries we see online?) if I hit a bomber with 5 30mm in the fuse. . . it's done. I mean it explodes right then and there. . . done. But you are right that B-29s are usually the toughest.

One good hit in the cockpit though and any airplane is done.

Big, tough bird. If the Betty can eat 5 or 6 body hits (another thread) certainly this bird can eat more. In 3-yrs of flying this I've only had rubber bullets once.

The film viewer shows more 30mm hits than actually happen.

The film viewer shows more 30mm hits than actually happen.

With all the internet problems I think we probably all break even as far as things going wrong in game (that are internet related). Some anomalies work in our favor and some against. We tend to only remember the things that go against us.

I had read in an earlier posting the film viewer could go slightly out of sync and change things up one way or the other. I have experienced something like this after a few times shuttling back and forth in the same film. Now I mark down the elapsed time, and then close and re-open the viewer and go straight to just before the point I want to see. Then all seems in sync again.

Because the 30mm makes a fireball, it's easier for me to see 30mm hits even in fleeting glimpses during play. For a long time, I thought planes were catching fire only to look back puzzled to not see fire. Looking at the films is how I learned about the fireball from 30mm hits.

While watching films, noticed some things that I could be wrong about:

1) The bomb bay doors appear to be indestructible and might even act as shields.
2) When the bombers are firing back the damage to them appears to be less than if they aren't.
3) Once parts detach from the bomber they inflict no damage to the bomber or other planes.

Erik19, I wonder did that g2 have gondies, lil sucker is almost an a8 with gondies.

Either that or he kept hitting / drilling the same spot... which is key.
Flip side is that if any fighter stays in same spot, they get drilled also.

My difficulty with bombers more than anything is keeping up with them.
They seem relatively fast, almost faster in too many cases.
The figher needs overwhelming speed to hit and run slashing or otherwises,
Since we all know coming in from rear usually equals death.
