Back in the day, some "Technician Class" licensees were only into RC aircraft and never got on any other mode, but really enjoyes being licenced to do RC because they loved having a licence that allowed them to use the far higher power and far longer ranges for RC that being a ham alllowed.
Now, many NEW hams are enjoying using their PC for "digital" modes that thrive on signals from around the world that are too weak for the human ear to hear on the radio, but are loud and clear on a computer with proper software attached to their amateur radio. Getting on satallites is no longer only a rich man's hobby as a hand held antenna (twin band yagi beam with a duplexer) and a HT (handi-talkie--new for $200-400 but found used on ebay for $100 or so) can be sone by hams of any licence class from their driveway or back deck.
I would like to get a group of AH players who are also licensed amateur radio operators on. Even if you are not licenced but looking for help to GET licenced you should be welcomed. I am not so sure about using our FCC issued call signs on the forum, but a simple "Hi, licenced 30+ years here and a General Class in Arkansas" should do.
Let's see who and where the meteor-jockeys, brass pounders, TV deziens, 75 Meter 1.5 kW monsters, Sidewinders on 2, SMIRK and 10-10 members are out there.
