190a5 WEP
« on: July 26, 2013, 02:53:13 PM »
Ok maybe naďve question to some of you here, and correct me if im wrong but in Wikipedia says that 190A5 didn’t have a WEP. So how come the AH 190A5 does have a WEP?

Yes I know its Wiki and all that, but still is a reference credible or not you decide.

“Some A-5s were tested with the MW 50 installation: this was a mix of 50% methyl alcohol and 50% water, which could be injected into the engine to produce a short-term power boost to 2,000 PS (1,973 hp, 1,471 kW), but this system was not adopted for serial production”

MW50 is not the only method for WEP.  Merlins, for example, are simply run at higher boost settings when on WEP,  Was the A-5's BMW801 simply being run on a higher boost setting as well?

I think so (and it's one of the things that has been bugging me, since it was cleared for a higher ata off of WEP than it currently has, IIRC).

I'll see what I can find about 190 WEP systems.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

Higher rpm and boost, same system on the Fw 190, using the 3min/5min engine rating instead of the 30min military (=100%) rating.

The WEP setting was for 10 minutes on the Fw, if I recall. 3 minutes was for takeoff and climbout only. Earlier models of the 190A had shorter WEP times because of issues with engine teething problems and overheating, but by the time of 1943 and our A-5 variant (really... based on 190G test data), the WEP times were thoroughly established.

Panos, as mentioned the MW50 system is not the only WEP system. Our 190D benefits from from MW50 but our 190As and F simply use higher boost and more fuel to cool the charge in the cylinders, hence why the WEP runs through gas that much faster.
