V1 and V2
« on: July 25, 2013, 10:36:50 AM »
Saw an interesting channel 13 show on last night. Spitfires outfitted with a type of camera that gave the allies 3D recon photos. Had V1 and V2 rocket sites.

Hows about some V1 and V2 facilities to bomb? Maybe even actual rockets we could launch in a limited way. They were certainly part of the war.

Allied pilots would use their spits to get close to V1's in flight, placing a wingtip under a V1's wingtip, then they would initiate a roll and flip the V1's.
Pretty ballsy maneuver.

Check out a movie called "Operation Crossbow", which features a Peenemunde-style raid. The opening sequences describe the development of the V1, with an actress playing Hanna Reitsch, the famous test pilot. Operation Crossbow was in real life the operations against V-weapons, but the movie plot is fictional. Crossbow included Peenemunde, air defence over London and also strikes on V-1/V-2 sites by mossies and typhs.

There's also a good documentary about Operation Crossbow and V-Weapons on youtube.

There was also a V3, which was discovered by a spitfire pilot flying very low towards the hill containing the supercannon, the V3 structure was finished off by 617 Squadron with Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs and left unrepaired by the Germans as they retreated back to Germany. This supercannon in France was capable of hitting England.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the more creative terrain designers (Ranger, ahem) couldn't make V1 or V2 destroyable objects but the idea of them flying would be a job for the developers. That being said, what would you suggest? Random launches hitting random areas? That may be a bit of a mess to code and a bit of a irritant, perhaps, to some.  :)

The show talked about the Peennemunde raid. Showed the recon photos taken that led to the raid. Operation Crossbow as well as the recon that led to the dam busting missions. Many real films and photos were presented. Quite a bit of history presented. The allies learned everything about the German war machine, and put it to good use.

The ability to bomb the facilities would be the 1st thing. The target would have a very specific footprint, V1 launch rails, V2 assembly buildings.

As for launching rockets well.................they would cost perk points...... you would have too select targeting based on cords, wind speed, distance to target...................woul d not be able to repeatedly fire from same launch point, without some load time. The V1 and V2 were pointed in right direction but when fuel ran out they just became ballistic in nature. You should not be able to be super accurate. Prolly easier in real life to hit a target than in game. London had a huge footprint as compared to AH facilities.

I would luv to try and flip a V1 in flight....................... ...

It would just make for an interesting target to eliminate, make the bomber guys happy.

I would add that in real life, the way it worked was that the allies sent false reports back to the Germans about where the V-1s were landing, so in fact the Germans were fooled into bombing the outskirts of South London, rather than the important targets in the centre. This is a key point, which devs should be bear in mind when considering how powerful these weps should be, unlike WW2, a team will be able to send players over to escort V-1's and to "spot" like artillery spotters.

I'm new to the game, but a lot of these good ideas people have seem to hinge a bit on espionage. The merchant convoy idea too would be exciting if there was espionage and counter-espionage, maybe "spy" is a C47 cargo option, which then feeds info. "Spies" can be captured and "turned" and the nme can be fed false artillery, V-1 or false strat information and so on, maybe false info about a CV direction. I would think something would need to be added to the game to balance the V-weps.

How would you make the mechanics for the spy thing work?
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.
