A great display of pilot skill.  :salute Pearson and Quintal.
I read it on the internet, so it must be true !

When I began training for IFR air traffic control back in October 1993, my instructor Les Peddle with Transport Canada was one of the controllers stationed on the scopes at Winnipeg IFR Center, where I was hired to work, during the Gimli Glider Incident.  Pretty interesting to hear his side of it from the controller's aspect too.

It was an amazing bit of flying, had I been on board I'd have been trying to shake the pilots' hands and get autographs, that's for sure....after cleaning out my pants at least.

The Air Cadets operate out of Gimli airport. Capt Pearson went up for a sailplane ride today,to commemorate the event.
The Cadets were in awe to meet him.

I think the 767 has a better L/D than the Schwietzers the Cadets fly lol

I like the way they even managed to avoid hitting the kids playing on the runway... this doesn't get as much accolade as the Hudson River landing, but it has to rank highly. My favourite is the DHL Cargo Bagdad landing, the only ever successful non-hydraulic landing, sadly very few people know their names.

Another good, and happy, jet airliner as glider incident was TACA 110, a 737 that lost both engines while descending to land at New Orleans:
