Looking for help on a couple things
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:41:18 PM »
Hi guys.  There are two things I don't really have in my arsenal in this game that I'd like to tune up.

First, I don't quite seem to get the barrel roll defense.  I use it somewhat, and I'm decent at avoiding the other guy's guns, where the failure tends to come in is getting the gun solution after he goes through.  By the time I get guns on most of the time, he's 600-800 out.  I'm not quite sure how to go about it, maybe someone could take a look at what I do and explain where I'm going wrong?  It just seems like it needs 'tightening' somewhere, but I'm not sure where.

Second, my merge in a 1v1 is the weakest part of my game.  I believe where I go wrong is decision making based on what the other guy is doing.  I'm looking for a tuneup on that as well.

I am on Mountain time here, generally available after 8 EST.  Tonight might not be until a little later if the wife ack has ideas.

Wiley.
If you think you are having a 1v1 in the Main Arena, your SA has failed you.

Not sure that much help can be provided without film.  Sounds to me, and I'm not really the guy to ask about , I'm the worst fighter pilot in the game.   But if the nme is 800 out by the time you get guns on him, sounds like he had a great deal of smack.  Was he booming and zooming.   I only use the barrel roll when nme is near my speed I pull power and do the barrel roll so that he ends up just in front of me.   With boom and zoom, I slow down as they dive in and do a break turn to avoid, If you can continue to avoid the boom and get them to reduce the speed ,they lose the ability to zoom, you can get them into the area(speed and alt) where the barrel becomes effective.  Make they fight your fight.

Wiley, I'm usually in the TA most weeknights (except of course Friday) after 7 pm pdt. Anytime you want to work on something look me up.
As for the BRD I personally feel it's more important to be missed by the attacker than it is to get guns on him as he goes through. The more times you make him miss the more opportunity you have to equalize your E states. You also put yourself into a better position once he passes because now you are behind his 3/9 line even if he is out of guns range. Once you have an equal E state you can eventually control the fight.

I think it's a gamble when playing the barrel roll defense card. Either you pop flaps and slow down and he zooms on by out of range, or you keep your speed and do a simple roll to evade it. If you pop flaps, and he doesn't slow down, then you're doing nothing to help your E state. If you don't pop flaps and he slows down, he can easily sit on your tail. I would save the barrel roll for the second or third pass that the con makes against you. By that time you should know whether or not he slows down or not and you can act accordingly.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

Thanks much for the help in the TA, SIK.  You cleared up a couple things I had in my head that had me working in the wrong direction.  Really helpful session.

Ink, I'll take you up on that next time I see you.  Thanks again all for the input.

Take a look at this, might help, you can view it in the AH film viewer.  you can fast forward and I use an IR so you need to look around using the key pad.

This 109 Boom and zooms and watch as I reel him in.

Notice that with each of his booms and zooms I cut his alt and speed in half.

Wiley you can practice barrel rolls using a runway as a reference line. The runway represents the ground path of a fast bandit that's trying to boom and zoom. Approach the runway at various angles and fly barrel rolls where you come out pointed at the end of the runway. This will help you learn to adjust your exit angle while rolling and inverted.

For a bad 1v1 merge start by pointing further behind the bandit, ease your pull to maintain energy, and climb into his turn circle when the bandit turns hard into you.
