Yee gads, I remember that series! The cab was actually the front end of a helicopter that could take off and leave the rest behind in an emergency.  The one time they actually did that in the series, someone shot at it like 10 seconds after it was airborne, miraculously hitting a fuel or oil line and bringing it down only a couple miles from when it took off from.  Potentially cool idea that failed spectacularly in execution.
