The problem is: The TA is empty most of the time. If a new player follows the sound advice of "GO TA" given on country channel, he won't find anything there that would actually help him.

The new player will see a message in the TA explaining how to contact a trainer and will be one click away from the AH help page.

the message thing is online in the TA.....he will only have two weeks of free online, he will want that for combat.  the new player needs to have basic flight skills before going online.   i have taken  some noobs to the side just to help them set up their VIEWS,instruct them how to land as far as approach, speed and flaps,  and just some basics, like how to change fuel tanks and drop the hook for carrier landings.  things like this  and also how to take off without auto take off and re-arm.should be learned BEFORE going online.  it will get him interested  in the game more,if when he engages in combat,he already knows those basic things. he just has to engage in combat and have fun.   remember its the little things that will make a difference.  how many times have we seen on country some guy asking,   how do i use the bomb sight? how do i drop bombs? how do i open the doors on the bomber?  some guys are helpful, some guys get annoyed, i use to hear guys say alt-f4 to these guys all the time. for a joke........how many of those players didnt return? it seems the joke is now on us.   put yourself in their place.     its hard to find some of the pages for .dot commands, some are difficult to understand on how to use, some are not even listed( like the dot command to spawn BEHIND the enemy spawn on certain spawns)

maybe a seperate training arena with tutorial OFFLINE would be a good option?  either way.  the number one reason new players leave is because they say....its too hard to learn...at least with the 40-50 i have asked.

I'd like to see the 2 free weeks extended but the extension would apply to the TA only.

Or,a separate arena for new players only, been awhile but I think AW had an arena that after a set time you no longer got ammo after a  certain amount of time. Something along these lines to help retain new players.

How long the extended free play in this limited fashion isn't up to me but I would think it would have to be close to a month or so. This would give a new player 2 weeks free play in all of Aces High and an extension of another month in a limited capacity. We have WW1 sitting mostly empty so maybe it could be included in the extra month to encourage it's usage, possibly setting a time limit with a pop-up that you must go to the new players arena if you want to continue to fly.

   YMMV.

A similar idea was expressed in another thread. Something along the lines of EW being free with the question being would this encourage more subscribers, or would most settle for the free, but limited, EW arena. An extended free period might be just the right compromise. 2 weeks is enough for those of us who grew up loving WW2 aviation or who came from one of the other sims, but it probably isn't enough to hook someone who wants to give it a casual look.

I don't think Aces High was designed for people who are unable or unwilling to learn simple things on their own.

That's kind of an odd attitude for a trainer!

When I was out of work I had started an interactive flash animation tutorial with the idea of getting the basics across. It was a lot of work so it got shelved when I got a new job. Another project that will never get done :(

Here's my attempt:

I hope this helps.

Perhaps a simple 1 or even two week extension to the game may aid in retaining subscribers... I agree that for those who are not WWII aviation buffss, it may be harder to "get into" the game for newer players.

I'll tell you this, if I was a brand new player again and only played in a scenario like BoB or some of the other great events lined up by the AH2 community, I would have been even more hooked than I currenltly already am... ... Hook the Dar Bar into my veins!!!!  :devil

I'll go with this, 1 week addiition to the trial period, with STRONG emphasis to new players on events. The hardest thing I found was where/who to goto to discuss joining an event... Is there a way to link the "events" with in-game notifications?   I'm just spit-balling here, because I know personally as a noob, it was challenging to get to where I could join an event.
