If I had to pick one book to recommend above all others it would have to be...

"Nanette: Her Pilot's Love Story" by Edwards Park

Park was a P-39 pilot in the 41st FS/35th FG during the early part of the war in New Guinea. Where most pilots conjure imagines of the dashing ace, Park blames the early war rush to get pilots to the front lines as the only reason he didn't wash out of basic training.  Here is someone who was grabbed by the back of the neck and hurled into the war and all he wants to do is to do his time and come home in one piece.  It is a really story, nearly required reading in the 80th.
