Reference for aircraft identifications abilities
« on: October 01, 2013, 10:37:25 AM »
I'm searching for a reference about a pilot ability to distinguish between different plane types. What do I mean.

Lets say we have several war time plane sets

(a) Spitfire Mk I, Hurricane Mk I vs 109E4
(b) P-51D, P-47D vs 109G and 190D
(c) 109G, 190A vs La-5, Yak-9

I'm looking on them from different directions from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock and from different pitches i.e. 0 degree 30 degree, 90 degree.

At what distance can average pilot distinguish friend or foe? Of course from dead 6 at 0 degree pitch it is harder than lets say 7 o'clock 30 degree...

I need some references and data.

Thanks!
