Green Desert Frame-3
END GAME Operation Cartwheel has been a vicious bloody struggle. The Allied high command has been surprised by the tenacity of the Japanese defense. As 1943 wains into 1944 the fighting spirit of the Japanese will be tested more than ever. The American Air Force is growing stronger more heavy and medium bombers are arriving in theater. The valiant B-25C units that have borne the heaviest losses have been replaced by new squadrons flying the A-20 Havoc. The increase in B-24s now mean they can have larger formations. Even though a few more P-38s become available in New Guinea demand for the P-47 in Europe keeps the big Republic fighter from increasing its numbers. The battle weary P-40Es have been replaced with newer P-40Ns. The P-39D units are left to soldier on until suitable replacements can be introduced for those squadrons.
For the Japanese Army Air Force it is business as usual. The remaining Ki-61s are barely being kept operational by the utmost effort on the part of their ground crews. The Ki-43's simple design and sturdy radial engine allows them to remain the backbone of the IJAAF. The Japanese Navy's A6M3 model 32s were always low in number and due to losses and battle damage they have pretty much disappeared from the combat zone. This leaves the A6M3 Model 22 (A6M5) the sole Japanese Naval fighter in theater. Heavy losses aside the Americans have managed to gain ground to the North opening new airfields and forcing the Japanese to retreat from some of their Southern most operational bases.
