Game Performance on Workstation GPU
« on: November 14, 2013, 11:05:49 AM »
The time has come for a new computer.  I'm looking at the new Mac Pro (I run Windows using Bootcamp) but am wondering about the performance of the workstation GPU cards it will have (Firepro D300, D500 or D700 --- D700 being on par with the Firepro W9000).

While these GPUs are very powerful just how well do they work with games?

The other option is the iMac with the GeForce GTX780M graphic card.

Thanks

For the base starting price of the mac pro you could build 2 damn good gaming pcs with faster CPU/GPU. Not trying to deter you away from mac, but seriously? $3k for the standard model with only 4 core cpu and their lowest end graphics Firepro D300, You are merely paying for design not functionality. If you like the Mac OS you can always install that along side windows or use it with virtualbox.

Typically, the workstation graphic cards are optimized for OpenGL and a horrific number of vertices.  They normally do not perform that well in a DirectX game environment.

installing osx on a pc platform is always a hack in some manner. far different than what even mac haters like myself thought it would be when apple switched to the intel hardware platform. it has gotten easier though.  :D

if you want to build a pc that can run both osx and windoze...check out hackintosh.com and tonymacx86.com

Thanks Skuzzy...that's what I was wondering, I had read a review that seemed to allude to that.
