Frame rate hit
« on: November 15, 2013, 03:10:06 PM »
My turn to ask: Until tonight I have been having solid 59 fps with everything ticked. I haven't been playing for a couple of weeks, though, but there hasn't been any major updates/-grades on my rig in between. Now on tonight's Grinder map I noticed that my fps was about 38. A reboot did not help.

So I started examining the subject and found the culprit: With Detailed Terrain ticked I suffer a frame rate loss. Up in 10k it doesn't affect any more, but choosing Local Water Reflections will still cut some 10 fps off even if I looked up in the sky.

E8500, HD6970, 4gb, XP.

Any ideas?

That's the problem. There was no apparent culprit. A normal field with a couple uppers at the most.

Further notifications: It happened at A65, but as I got past the canyon to east, the fps got back to normal! Did some surface flying on the coastline east of A65 with and without Water Reflections, on the average 55 fps. As soon as I headed back to the canyon, 40'ish. Could it be a bug in the terrain, although no one else I asked said so?

 Biz,

I normally get 60FPS but noticed a slight stutter the other night, frame rate was going all the way down to 53 FPS so I checked my settings and noticed I had local water reflections on.

I  unchecked that and all went back to normal. I run detailed terrain without issue but water reflections seem to bog my system down.

Thanks for the input, both of you. As said, I noticed the problem was related to A65 on The Grinder. I noticed no strange behaviour over A66, the only trouble there was the enemy ack. With both Detailed Terrain and Local Water Reflections ticked.

Oh, and forgot to mention the resolution: 2560x1600

Case solved. It definitely was the one field and its surroundings on Grinder: the A65. Tonight on a different map I got solid 59 fps with exactly the same settings. Is it a bug or just a larger bunch of terrain elements, I don't know. That's beyond my powers to investigate. Should this be rather have been sent to the bug forum?

I didn't create Grinder, Machnix did. I doubt there is anything he could do anyway. HTC does any bug fixes to MA terrains once they are in the game.
