Noob question

OK, I've been looking for a good hour now.  How does one convert the texture files to BMP/PSD for editing?

The file starts out as a .bmp file, when you save it you need to make sure it's extension is .psd. When you are finished working and want to test the image, you need to flatten it and make sure it is saved in .bmp (indexed) format.

So when you go to save, right next to the file name just add on the file format you want.

Start the game and load off-line play. Once the game is loaded, go to the hanger and right click the plane type you want to skin. This opens a menu. At the bottom click "save default skin". Close the game. Now navigate to the skins folder C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High\skins and you'll notice a new folder.... named like the plane you selected. Open that folder and you will find all the art for that plane.

You can use these as a template, but it is HIGHLY frowned upon to use any of the original art work in your skin. You should start by making your own panel lines and the rivets and so on building the skin. Save often and as Dragon tamer said.

Krusty has a great skinning tutorial here http://www.nakatomitower.com/skins/

That's the key I was missing.  Thank you gentlemen.
No worries, I've been skinning MS Flight Sim for over a decade. I always do my own work. right down to dirt, grime and rivet heads.
