Trying to open .mov files
« on: November 24, 2013, 08:53:12 PM »
Looking for help opening my .mov files in adobe premiere CS3.

I've read numerous sources that says it can't be done without a file converter, or another video editing program to save it as another file type.

So... Any advice or suggestions for a free or cheap video editor program that I can open and save mov files to open them in premiere CS3.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

MOV file is only a container; you'll need to find out what codec the video uses. You need Quicktime Pro from Apple installed to open video using their propitiatory codecs.

Sounds like you're missing the codec needed for Premiere. Video players like VLC usually have their own codecs.

This issue drove me NUTS when I first started to try and make my own movies.  Frankly, mucking about with codecs etc. is as much of a pain and a risk as simply converting the videos to MP4s with a downloaded converter.

What converter did you use?

I don't remember man, to be honest.

I'll have to look at home later.

I downloaded it from one of the more reputable download sites.

Couple options...
Change the extension from .mov to .mpg
Run it through a converter like Hampster or Handbrake

Depending on what codecs were used to create the file, those may or may not work.  My camcorder (JVC) creates .mod files. Premiere will have nothing to do with them. If I rename them to .mpg Premiere will open them, but due to the way JVC sets the audio codec, the audio will be missing.

It was as easy as downloading quick time for windows. I didnt have it on my newer desktop. This did not work for my older desktop.

WHo knew it was that easy?  :)

Wasn't for me, but glad you got it sorted.  The converter I used turned out to be on my old machine which has been rebuilt, so I couldn't help, sorry.
