i figured out the problem with historical arena
« on: January 28, 2001, 03:42:00 AM »
too many plane centric guys

only way for HA to work is if we have era and thatre specific days

IE one day, the specialevents arena is  med terrain, with 1943 euro planeset

next day, terrain is pac, with 1944 pacific planeset

now, ill fly anything so it doesnt bother me, but would hangtime fly a f6f? would nash fly a 109? would mitsu fly a 190? yeager in a jug?

would it work? or would only 10 guys be willing to give up their MA rides?

Lol yah... good question.

I was stuck in a 109 for the entire 5 or whatever it was frames of the Med scenario... and *hated* it. I even spent a week practising with it in the MA beforehand... yet I maybe got only 3-4 kills in the thing in the entire scenario. Just didn't click with me.

Heh - I would laff my ARSE off seeing Hang in one! His cat would probably puke in his lap.

I'm sure though that there would be at least *something* in the plane set though that would be a little more tolerable.

Nah, yeah... I think the trade-off in the limited selection would be balanced by, well, all the other cool stuff that would be a part of an HA.

I'd learn to deal with it I think.

Heh being stuck in a 1 gun G2 vs Spits was entertaining

Especially with a Staffelkapitän that rushed into 6 Spits and 6 Tiffies at the same time, no?

Rgr zig, thats may be part of the solution.

From talking to HT I think his biggest concern is strickly one of arena numbers.

In WB the HA (when I was flying it anyway) was seldom occupied except for prime time hours. Even then many nights there were so few flying as to make finding a fight tough.

Until AH has a larger player base pushing the arena limits in main so that we NEED an overflow arena for primetime I don't see it happening.

As far as a daily rotation, well that does end up makeing a fair amount of work for someone daily. However I think a weekly rotation would certainly work, keep things fresh, and let everyone get a shot at "their" ride at least once a month.

More planes would also help IMO.

The sooner everyone out there gets 2 friends to sign up & stay the sooner we get an HA!

I'm certain that the majority of the 13th would love to participate in an HA event from time to time.

My only concern is that not enough players would support it...40 guys in the HA would not be much fun for me at least.

I believe that HTC will enable a HA arena when numbers grow past 300 or so....HA is the most fun for me, but until then, the MA will have to do

Instead of worrying about a HA, how about more large scale scenarios?  I mean those are really what keeps me here.  Verm, Busc and others have done a GREAT FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC job with them in the past but they are just so much work that we dont see many of em...plus we're kinda limited by planesets.

What we really need instead of a whole new arena is a set of core mid-war planes to allow scenario designers more freedom to create realistic scenarios.

My hope oneday is to have some large scale scenario frame EVERY weekend.  When one scenario ends, the next begins the following week.  Now THERE'S realism for ya

I don't have the SLIGHTEST interest in any number of arenas greater than 1.

To a lot of people the HA is a place to Ghettoize improvements a lot of people want, but that they hate personally...for example, an RPS, etc.

All that interests me is a large MA with an RPS, and a lot of really well-designed large scale scenarios.

Not an MA with an eternal late war planeset and an HA with 15 guys in it at any given time where every improvement to the MA that is in any way controversial or disliked by anyone gets shunted.

I like shooting at blue American planes when I am in a Zero.

I like having 109s and 190s attack me when I am in a B-17 or Lancaster.

I would like to fly the early 109s, if I only was opposed by early Spits and Hurricanes.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

Nash "only 3-4 kills" was quite good for that scenario.  Trust me, it wasn't so easy to chase G-2's in a Spit V.  The extra guns and turn rate are nice, but giving up 1000 fpm and 25 mph is not easy to overcome.

My desire for an HA is to be able to face off against historic forces as much as possible, it has nothing to do with how many kills, how many points or flying my fave plane everyday.

I am tired of shooting or being shot by blue, British, or any Allied plane.

I realize it is a numbers thing and that many do not want to fly for an hour without a fight but that happened a lot and a simulation of WWII combat should reflect that.

It is a tough situation and perhaps the only solution is to hope like hell IL2 works well online.

I try, and mostly fail, to spend my AH time on strategic issues and do not concern myself with the other 200 in the arena, only those in my immediate area and the fewer the better.

When did they put this thing in here and WTF is it for?
