Arena Latitude and Day of Year
« on: December 27, 2013, 02:11:17 AM »
Currently the sun rises directly on the east goes at 90 degrees direction to the top and then sets exactly on the west at 90% degree with relation to the earth.

It would be nice to be able to define the earth latitude and day of year such that the sun path would be more accurate and natural.

We are in Hitech's Dyson ring playing under his dome.

Hmm.

HTC TO DO LIST

1. Terrain
2. Planez
3. Gee Vees
4. Sheep

...

93. Fix titanium trees (when we find a new alloy)
94. Schedule Sheep Therapy
95. Make the sun realistic in appearance and function

While I see where you're coming from, I doubt it will happen .   :salute

may I ask what is the purpose?
do you want to use a sextant for navigation?

Actually there several things parameters:

1. The sunset/sunrise speed - how much time it takes for the sky to become clear. Makes good appearance for SEA for example flying at north areas with lots of sun but close to the horizon.
2. The location of the sun isn't always 90/270 so if you takeoff W/E you don't get it directly to the eyes
3. The shadows would be much more natural - i.e. the sun just above you at 12:00 almost never exists in real life especially in the areas were WW2 was.

Now, It can be implemented quite trivially (two new parameters for the arena and simple equation update for the sun location) and would improve the impression at SEA.

I would also add non-standard atmosphere - for example in Hot areas (North Africa) the performance is very different the aircraft performance at north.

Although I could be totally wrong on this, perhaps it's already being implemented?  At the frontpage of HTC they show a small video clip of the 'self shadowing' terrain.  Perhaps this is an effect of a 'more realistic' sun?  *shrug*

Could be totally wrong, but just a thought.
