The Mighty 8th
« on: December 17, 2013, 05:57:44 PM »
Fun little B-17 simulator. Downloading it now, from http://www.gog.com/game/b_17_flying_fortress_the_mighty_8th for $3. From what I've seen, it's an old B-17 sim. Choose your target, fly to it, AI bombers come with you, AI fighters try to shoot you down, AI Fighters escort you, neat little game. Apparently (if) you die, you don't get to continue the game, and you try to complete a full tour. (25 sorties) There's squadron commander mode, which allows you to access 12 bombers instead of just one. You can choose the crew, their names, and they all have certain levels of experience in different things. Say your navigator was hit by flak, well you would have the best guy in your plane go over and fix him up. I'll get back to you guys some more about this game when the download is done.  :salute

It's an old, old game.  Remember playing it when it first came out.  Anyone remember 50 Mission Crush from the '80s?

I much preferred the older DOS version.  More targets.  I was hoping this new one would be better than the older one, and in many ways it is, but not without a cost.  Fighter attacks only happen FOUR times in this one.  After that fourth one, your only worry then was being taking down by flak.  It didn't matter if your mission was DEEP into German territory.  Only get attacked 4 times.  In the DOS version, you were almost always attacked twice when flying through a fields radius and unless you shot down all 4 planes in the first attack, you will be attacked again on your way out of the airfields radius.  Almost always, it did depend on how much of the airfields radius you flew through.  If you skimmed it, you were attacked just the once.  Usually, you would fly through a chunk though.

The DOS version:

Go figure, I'd youtube it and I'd get a video where the Primary Target is a Power Station, the Secondary Target is a Railyard.  Usually it was the other way round for me.  Only ONCE in the whole time I have played the DOS version did I get a Power Station as a primary, which ended with my bomber getting shot down by 110's. :bhead
