P38 Drop Tank size
« on: December 09, 2013, 11:21:24 AM »
It would be nice to have the option of two, 75 gallon drop tanks for the P38s.  The two 75 gal would be a better fit to most sorties in AH rather than the twin 150s. I am aware the 75 gallon was more common on the single engine planes.  I could only find this reference on the internet but I have no hard documented source.

The next day the 55th Fighter Group flew its first P-38 mission from Britain, a fighter sweep over the Dutch coast. Equipped with 75 gallon drop tanks, the P-38 had an effective escort radius of 520 miles (compared to 375 miles for the P-47). In February 1944 the P-38 units received 108 gallon drop tanks, which increased their effective radius of operations to 585 miles, long enough to reach Berlin. Between October 1943 and March 1944, the P-38 was the longest range fighter available to the 8th Air Force (in March 1944 the P-51D finally received drop tanks that gave it an effective escort range of 650 miles).

The option of a 75 gallon tank would be nice on the F4U's also. However, I have never scene anything other than a 150 gallon tank, but the 75 would be nicer option as a backup because the later F4U's only have the single internal tank.

what about the BIG DTs for the 38s for those loooooong escort missions. I could be wrong but there were 375Gal tanks used on 38s espically the droop snoots.

Speaking of droop snoots if anyone wants to run a "DS" mission the 49th hosts them using a Boston as the lead 38 and everyone auto wings on him its pretty fun to hit town with. hit up my self or 49merlin in game currently rooks till late spring
