fire safety importance of fire extinguishers
« on: January 09, 2014, 06:11:04 PM »
just want to remind everyone how important it is to have fire extinguishers on hand, I just had a close call working on my exploder :O  I have a 12 volt inline fuel pump that I was using to drain the gas out.  I am not sure what happened but, the next thing I know the whole underneath was up in flames, I had the pump underneath with wires ran out to a battery behind the rig as I have done a million times before.  I did not see any gas leaks on my hoses, I Always check this out before I move away from the pump.  I ended up shoving the car out of the way and grabbed my HANDY extinguisher and put it out before it got wild.  so make sure that you have a GOOD extinguisher HANDY while working on anything.  This was my first time ever having something scare me like that.

that reminds me of what happened back in 86 when I borrowed my mom's station wagon to go to san pedro california.  on the way back I stopped at a gas station for fuel.  while there I notice that the oil was low.  so I bought a quart and was adding it when some spilled on the hot engine and caught fire.

I turned around and ran to the cashier and asked him to borrow his fire extinguisher.  he told me no because his manager would get upset if he let somebody borrow it.  I told him the whole gas station may go up in flames as I was right next to the pumps.

finally he opens the door and lets me use it and I put out the fire.  the whole thing lasted about 20 or 30 seconds.  fortunatelly there wasnt a lot of damage and was able to drive it home.

I always thought that was some either really dumb clerk or pretty scared of his manager.  ever since then i always carry one in my car.  never know when you gonna need one.

Having been an owner of a '66 VW 1300 sedan Beetle, I learned the importance of having a fire extinguisher in the trunk.
