New map making.
« on: January 11, 2014, 10:08:35 PM »
Do we have, can we currently share new maps as they are being made? I'm just wondering, I know they are hard to make but mabe if the people who make them could share them and work together on them it could help make them quicker. Say "bob" is good at doing one thing, and "Tom" is good at another, and working together would help. Or if Tom only has 4hrs a week and bob has 3hrs it could work that way as well. Just me thinking....

I had a discussion with one of the map makers about this. For the most part you can't have one person do one thing and another do something else at the same time and then put it all together and have a working map. I suppose the testing part could be spread out. Get a map to that point and hand it out to 20 guys to have them fly and check a 3x3 sector section for issues/errors.

I guess the other issue that comes up is "creative issues". One guy wants it like "this" and another wants it like "that". I wish the tools were a bit easier to work with and you could have teams working on separate sections and then put it all together at the end.

Terrain Collaboration

Anyone can create a 1024 or 2048 bitmap for their idea of a MA terrain and post it in the Terrain Editor forum along with offering it up to the community. They don't need to actually build anything, because if the layout is "worthy", someone with the time and TE experience will pick it up.

Most of the problems with collaborating on a Main Arena terrain will relate to the social pitfalls inherent in such a project.

IMO, the biggest problem with making a map is the sheer amount of time it takes to simply create major land masses. And you can't quickly and easily see what the whole thing looks like, which could cause issues with following land masses.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

This is caused by lack of experience. Choosing the right tool and technique to use for the specific job makes all the difference, and it's going to become more important as the terrains become more complicated.

To clarify my statements above, if you open the TE with the objective of building an MA masterpiece, without first doing a lot of work in GIMP or Photoshop, you've already doomed yourself to failure.
