Always Wondered Why These Old AH1 Gunsights Are Popular.
« on: January 22, 2014, 07:26:00 PM »
In another post an old AH member has come back and was asking for an old AH1 era P51D Jabo gunsight. It's the old style that's very geometric with rocket and bomb marks to make a bombardier get warm and fuzzy. So I super imposed two ww2 gunsights over it used specifically for "glide bombing" and firing the 5 inch rockets by the AAF and NAVY. I wanted to see how ww2 physics calculations faired against in game calculations by players.

First at their calibrated 100Mil and 101Mil real world size. Then up scaled by 128 to 150Mil trying to match the default scale of the old P51D game gunsight which is 174Mil in diameter.

I found by using the AAF L3\Mk8\N9 sight with rocket aid upscaled to 150Mil. The bomb dropping and rocket firing better matched the release points of the offline lead computing bomb\rocket dive bombing cross. It worked better for the Mossi6 glide bombing than a standard 100Mil ring.

Below is the old AH1 era P51D jabo gunsight and then the NAVY Mk8 and AAF N9 super imposed first at 100Mil default, then 150Mil up scaled.

Old AH1 P51D Jabo Gunsight. That's one busy Snowflake.

I'm not sure why they were popular either.

My favorite by far is the tiny dot sight you made me a few years ago.

Before that my favorite had been the little red/white dot-sight that's been around forever, but I actually thought it was kind of large/over-bearing for my taste.

Suppose I should include an "Extra" folder with some dots and blue thingy testing reticle along, with the historic reticle in my upcoming release. I've found another manual to add to the gunnery folder along with some pictures of the german method for calculating deflection.

Still the best gunsights after all these years.
