III/JG-3 109G6 paint schemes
« on: February 09, 2014, 12:44:36 PM »
I always thought III/JG-3 had some of the coolest looking G6s. I've always wondered why none of the Luftwaffe Skinners never did them. Back when in my hardnosed Luftwaffe days I always hoped one of these would show up. If I remember correctly the comet emblem had some to do with the Gruppe's use of the WGr21 rockets. Its been a while since I hit the Luftwaffe books hard though and I may be mistaken.

I do have to say the Tatzlewurms on the JG-3 Emil and Frederich we have in game are sweet though.  :aok

Shifty, I attempted one of these schemes last year. I'll do my best to explain the problems.

The reason that the "Comet" schemes aren't done has to do with how the cowl bulges are done with the skin map. There is a seam that runs horizontally through the middle of the bulge, then at the cowl hatch panel line, runs at an upward angle to the base of the windscreen. You can see the seam here on this G-2, look for the difference.

The G-6 uses the EXACT bitmap as the G-2, only the areas that are bulged get stretched to fit over the larger area. On the G-6 that seam has other angles on the bulge. So, not does that area look pixilated because of the stretching, but the oddly angled seams mean that lining up the sections of the comet so that they display on the plane in game correctly is near impossible.

Ahh makes sense Devil. That's a pity I don't know why that paint scheme has always been a favorite of mine. JG-3 in general had some exotic paint jobs. Thanks for the info.  :aok
JG-3 and JG-1 have always been my favorite Jagdgeschwaders mainly because my favorite Luftwaffe pilot Heinz Baer flew 190s in both.

That's such a bummer. I've seen those schemes in tons of Luftwaffe books and they are one of my favorites. It's a bummer that it can't be done but  :salute to the effort and explanation.
