Except that I think McLean had the Altamont concert in mind as the day the music died.  End-of-the-Sixties thing.  Holly, et al. were all dead long before the events in "American Pie."

Heh.  There's been decades of on-line discussion about it.

Certainly people didn't take IFR as seriously back then (Holly's crash) as they do now.

I heard Stuart Varney this morning speaking about the crash and that Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on that plane to the Big Bopper. 

One can only wonder.
