Legendary sketch comic and actor Sid Caesar passed away on Wednesday, sadly lost in the shuffle of the recent deaths of Hoffman and Shirley Temple.
Caesar's 1950 series, Your Show of Shows, helped pioneer the TV variety show format, and its influence can still be seen today on programs such as Saturday Night Live. Mel Brooks, a close friend of Caesar's and who would later cast him in roles in History of the World Part I and Silent Movie, had one of his first big breaks in television writing for the series.
