I was taking glider lessons a few years back. My instructor always told me one of the biggest risks was pilots trying to stretch it too far trying to get home and not accepting a land-out while they still had the alt and speed to control the situation. Ironically, the closer you are to the runway the bigger the risk. You are sooooo close, the first instinct is to try for it rather than accept the embarrassment and possible glider damage from a land-out.
Many a glider pilot has been hurt with the end of the runway in sight.
He made a good choice. That's why he gets to sit with a cup of coffee and tell the story.
