I was flying Ju 88's in the "Operation Husky" scenario (June 2007), loaded with torps, out to sink enemy shipping.
After a long search, we found the enemy task group near the edge of the map. I zoomed in to look at it from long range and sew this:
The odd blue band far ahead looked sort of like clouds to me, or maybe like a far-off mountain range, but we were in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, no land anywhere near, so I figured it was some sort of cloud effect.
I had to reposition for a good attack angle on the carrier.
And then, looking forward, the blue bands began to look a lot like a water mountain. I was at 1000 ft alt in the middle of flat water, though, so I figured that it must be a graphics anomaly -- some sort of glitch in my card's graphics rendering.
Just then, I started taking hits from a Spitfire and had to jump to rear guns to do battle with him. I was still doing battle with him when this happened:
I didn't know this at the time, but back then (not sure about now), a map edge wrapped around to what was on the other side of the map. In this case, it was mountains, and so the water on my side of the map was ramping up to the height of the mountain range, making a water mountain, which I had slammed into.
Unfortunately, the Spitfire was able to break off and not crash.
