The b-17 and the 109. Honer and mercy.
« on: March 21, 2014, 05:25:49 AM »
I don't know if people know about this story but I erg them to read  in in the link below. I have to admit I brought tears to my eyes and if you really think about the b-17 crew and what they had been through and the honour and mercy of the 109 pilot you may understand why.

If this is about Franz Stigler then you should read his book. Not only does it go into his act of mercy but its a fascinating look into the life of LW personnel in WW2. I have the book, " A Higher Call" and Mr. Stigler was indeed an honorable man.

This story has done several rounds on the BBS here, but it deserves it. Since it is obviously new to you I guess you haven't seen the interview CBS did with Stigler, Brown and his surviving crew members.

By far one of my favorite stories from WW2! I try to fly with that same kind of honor in Aces High 2 and will never shoot at a plane that can no longer fight back.

Here's an interesting interview with Stigler to read if you haven't already seen it.

REading that Stigler interview I cam across this;

Quote
There was a gunsite for a Me262 (EZ42)…my friend Roger waned me to ask you about it…

Yeah…on the 262 it adjusted itself for the speed and acceleration, so…it was a Revi too, for all aircraft types it was the Revis…but o the 262 you saw it in the windshield…the reflection.

Now this I would love to see

In the summer 1942, the Askania company began work on the EZ 42, which gunsight could be adjusted for the target's wingspan (in order to estimate distance to the target). Three examples of the first series of 33 pieces were delivered in July 1944. These were followed by further 770 units, the last being delivered by the beginning of March 1945. Each unit took 130 labour hours to produce. The EZ 42 was made up by two major parts, and lead computation was provided by two gyroscopes. The system, weighing 13.6 kg (30 lb) complete, of which the reflector sight was 3.2 kg, was ordered into mass production at the Steinheil company in Munich. Approximately 200 of the sights were installed into Fw 190 and Me 262 fighters for field testing. The pilots reported that attacks from 20 degrees deflection were possible, and that although the maximum range of the EZ 42 was stated as approximately 1,000 meters, several enemy aircraft were shot down from a combat distance of 1,500 meters.[6]

The EZ 42 was compared with the Allied G.G.S. captured from in a P-47 Thunderbolt in September 1944 in Germany. Both sights were tested in the same Fw 190, and by the same pilot. The conclusion was critical of the moving graticule of the G.G.S., which could be obscured by the target. Compared to the EZ 42, the Allied sight's prediction angle was found on average to be 20% less accurate, and vary by 1% per degree. Tracking accuracy with the G.G.S. measured as the mean error of the best 50% of pictures was 20% worse than with the EZ 42.[7]

I've posted this film once before but it's still funny.

Ages ago I read about this story and thought it was fantastic. I had much respect for Stigler's humanity and independence.

Then just before Christmas a few years back in the MA I came across a formation of B-24s all beaten up and trailing fluids. So filled with good will to all men (even bomber pilots) I pulled alongside in as non-threatening a manner as I could manage and slowly closed the distance to look them over:

There's actually a book about Charlie and Franz's lives before the incident, but it mainly focouses on Franz's time in the Luftwaffe.

It's called A Higher Call, and it's a great read  :aok

Go read it
