I'd kind of like the F6F-6. Basically the same as the 5 but with an uprated R-2800 and a four bladed prop. There were a couple of F6F-6 prototypes built IIRC but no production examples as the engines were allocated to other aircraft like the F4U-4, P-47M or F8F.

Or going a bit more in the realms of fantasy, how about a Westland Whirlwind with Merlin engines rather than those awful Peregrines?

Nobody asked me what my mod would be <sniff> We'll I'm going to tell you anyway:

• Ki-84-Ia (what a shocker) with two cowl mounted Ho-5 20-mm cannon (as fitted to the Ki-84-II (Otsu)).
  
• Armament stripped from the wings to save weight and get rid of those annoying convergance issues.
  
• Underwing hard points removed for reduced drag & better acceleration.
  
• The longer rudder from the prototype with fettled pedals and cables for more movement (Moriarty!).
  
• Cut down prop from a Nakajima G8N (same engine). I'll just have to be careful on takeoff.
  
• Completely stripped of paint except for flat black anti-glare strip and some sign writing on the stab which says: 'How's my flying? Call 0800-up-your-nose-with-a-rubber-hose'.

Fw 190D9,add DB605,hub cannon,Mk103,cowl guns Mg151/15's 4 Mg151/20's in wings. MW50 for low alt,Nox for high alt.

Don't know if anyone's suggested this yet: How about option to put RATO packs on my P51, along with replacing 50-cals with four 20-mm. Imagine someone trying to boom-n-zoom you, only to have you light those off and catch them at the top of their zoom.

Come to think of it I think a stripped down Pony with the auxiliary fuel tank removed, the engine swapped with a Griffon, five blade prop, and a pair of Hispano's in place of the .50's might be interesting.

I think the flaps might give it an edge over the tempest, especially at low speed.
