SEC TODAY! Battle of Okinawa Frame 1 : Kumi Shima
« on: April 13, 2014, 12:55:12 PM »
KUMI SHIMA!

The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was
fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest
amphibious assault in the Pacific War. The 82-day-long battle
lasted from early April until mid-June, 1945. After a long
campaign of island hopping, the Allies were approaching Japan,
and planned to use Okinawa, a large island only 340 miles
away from mainland Japan, as a base for air operations on
the planned invasion of Japanese mainland.

Most of the air-to-air fighters and the small dive bombers
and strike aircraft were U.S. Navy carrier-based airplanes.
The Japanese had used kamikaze tactics since the Battle
of Leyte Gulf, but for the first time, they became a major
part of the defense. Between the American landing on
April 1 and May 25, seven major kamikaze attacks were
attempted, involving more than 1,500 planes.
The U.S. Navy sustained greater casualties in this operation
than in any other battle of the war!

Aircraft losses over the three-month period were 768
United States planes including those bombing the Kyushu
airfields launching kamikazes. Combat losses were 458,
and the other 310 were operational accidents. Japanese
aircraft losses were 7,830 over the same period, including
2,655 to operational accidents. Navy and Marine Corps
fighters downed 3,047, while shipboard antiaircraft
felled 409, and B-29s destroyed 558 on the ground.

Allies: Strikes launching from C1 arrived at V28 at 06:44hrs(arena time, event time: T+14) and began a relentless pounding of Japanese shore facilities, accomplishing their primary goal by 08:15hrs (arena time, event time: T+103).
Axis: Launch anti-ship strikes against TG 1 and succeeded in sinking C1 at 07:45hrs(arena time, T+75).

Allied TG2, already steaming into the combat zone recovered the remaining allied aircraft and proceeded to launch CAP and strike missions against Japanese installations. In response Japanese forces launched strike missions against TG2, destroying multiple ships guns and most importantly C2's radar at 08:25hrs(arena time, event time T+115).

Losses:
Axis lost 41 aircraft and pilots (34 KIA, 7 Captured).
Allies lost 41 aircraft and pilots (38 KIA, 3 Captured).

Frame 1 is a Draw! The Imperial Japanese forces have evacuated Kume Shima. The USN has had to replace it's leading TG.
V28 and C1 have been removed from the battle. C2's radar damage will not be repaired in time for frame 2.
Both the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army are bringing fresh forces to the fight, as are the Allies.
Frame 2 begins next Sunday (20 April). See you there!
