Its quite obvious that they're lucky it didn't spin up into a real monster instead of that weak sauce (but photogenic, if he could have held the camera steady) tornado that actually occurred.  And it still did damage and injured people.  If they kept their heads and stopped laughing idiotically they could have easily escaped in their truck by driving away from it, they had time, and clearly their current location was more of a danger to them than a shelter.
