Base Numbering

Is there any particular way the bases are numbered e.g east to west, north to south, etc

Generally not. It depends totally on how the terrain creator distributed the bases.

Note that you can quickly find any base on the map by the .sf dot command. With map open,     .sf (number) centers map view on the base in question

I rely on dot commands to quickly find a specific field on larger maps.  Primarily .move <#> or .goto <player>, the first moves you to that field, the later moves you to the field a friendly player is at or launched from last.
