Engine Noise
« on: June 11, 2014, 05:49:15 AM »
I'd like it if we could hear masses of aircraft even when they are outside of icon range. Like, for example, if there was a large B17 raid, you could hear the slow, steady hum of the engines as they advance, well before icon range.

Or for other instances, when there is a large group of fighters you would also hear the engines, just not from as far away or as loud if the number of them is equivalent to the bombers (bombers have 2-4 engines and drones per player, fighters usually have one).

Just an idea hopefully not about to be jumped.

Where do you want to hear them from? IRL, the sound of your own engine would be drowning out most outside noise, anyway.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

My apologies, I should've mentioned that I would want it heard only from a field/ship gun, the tower, or a vehicle with the engine off.

I like the intentions of the wish.  Still, I think the flashing bases and strat give a much wider warning, given an unlimited altitude and 15 mile (could be more) radius.  Adding another sound would add realism in some cases (which I am in favor of for film purposes and scenario immersion), but I would most certainly have it muted during Main Arena gameplay as an option.

Yeah I understand, though my intention wasn't to have this as a warning of an inevitable base attack, but just to add a bit more realism, and "ear candy" to the sounds we already have in AH.

Sort of like my wish to hear the 8in zooooooooooooooooom over your head while in tower/gv/gun  :D

Perhaps have a multiplier for this engine noise? So if you have x planes within a certain radius it increases the overall radius that the engine noise could be heard from.

I believe it's 3k-3.5k right now, so if you had 5 planes within 500 yrds of each other, then it increases to 4k or more. And, the more planes that are closer together, the louder it gets when you fly near them (or they near you).  Obviously, there would be a cap on the distance to engine noise, and loudness ratios, otherwise you would hear them 10k+ away, and destroy your speakers .   :lol

While not necessary I think it would be cool.

The hum of a bomber force would indeed be awesome.

I like the idea that Tinkles brings to the table, however I'd like for the numbers to be spread a bit, because I preferred that the engine noise (mainly for extremely large forces) be heard from even further than 10K. As in RL massive forces could be heard from much further.

Nothing would be cooler to be in a field gun and hear a B-17G raid coming from 15k out, going to intercept them at 20k and finding this  :aok

now think how cool it would be to be in a gun and it's so noisy because all other airplanes closer to you would need go be louder.

It's already noisy in a gun, but I see what you mean, this would just make it worse from that perspective.  You would still want to hear a large invading forces engines from a distance away, however not go deaf from your own forces taking off.. I'm sure there is a way to make it so you can get the former without the annoyance of the latter.

only if you lower the sounds of those airplanes closer to you while increasing the sounds of those further out. it can easily be done by a sound slider, I guess.

however that creates another problem, when in a furball you want to hear those airplanes that are closer to you louder than those that are further away.  many times I have saved my bacon because I heard the guy behind me before I could turn my head to look at him and thus evaded him.

Perhaps have a different slider for different perspectives?

Gun
Plane
GV

3 sliders for sound... while it is kind of over the top, I think it would be good to have that, sort of like the 'tracers on/off per plane wish'.  While it is more work for HTC down the road, it makes it easier to take advantage of those things while in-game.
