Last Saturday I took some lancs to 41, a base we were trying to capture and with a cv nearby. When I get there I realize no way can I kill 7 fighter hangers so I bombed the VH and the last ord. While we had several LTVs in route a bunch of uppers lifted but so how we got the base just as they reached town. Figuring I had some eggs and enough fuel for a pass going and a pass coming home I headed to 136. I hit the radar and maybe a fuel on the base leaving me 5 500 pounders and a 4k egg. So I thought I would drop them on the town. That yields 3 guns and 50 buildings. As I was about to land with 1 minute of fuel I see a set of bombers upping. I can't remember who it was, I think Airshark. So I ask where he's going, "To 136". I say get a deacker and I'll grab troops.
I up the goon and head that way calling for a deacker the whole way. Mean while our cv is heading in that direction. About when I get there my squaddie, Humboldt, ups. He's in a c hog and takes down the rest of the ack and few buildings. Airshark kills the vh and then drops on the town. Then another pilot comes in and straffs the town. I land on the beach by he shore battery, which is now firing at the our cv. Airshark makes a last pass and white flags the town. I taxi for a better take off path. No fighters up! Get lift and head to the town. It is all ours. Not wanting to get too close to the base I start dropping troops and for some reason think that I was getting too close to the base chop my throttle. All well and good but now I drop to 600 ft. and splat, my troops smack mother earth.
I scream, OMG, I dropped the troops too low. The radio chatter went deafening silent. I cannot express all the emotions I was feeling over the huge disappointment. I wanted to hide, change my name, curse the sun, the moon, and what have you. I could feel bad vibes over the silent radio. I quickly tell them I'll be back with another goon. That seemed to fall into pit of silence and despair.
I up another goon and head to 136, a nearly 2 sector ride, and no one is there on from our team. I head there just the same. When I get close the radar circle there radar comes up. Now there's a set of buffs and a fighter up. I'm not going to make it! I start thinking I might as well ditch but then Humboldt ups a c-hog again. Okay I'll try.
I start dragging the belly of the goon across the water to avoid radar detection. Humboldt starts to go for the bombers. I shout ignore the bombers and go for the fighter. Turns out the fighter had grabbed to about 11k. Humboldt says he's high! I said good because I'm on the deck. Humboldt goes for the fighter, a spit, in spite of spit having enormous altitude advantage. Nearing the town at full throttle and wep I pull up almost vertical. The spit then sees me and dives on me. I hear his guns but I know several troops go in from my earlier drop. The troops dropping where hidden by the outline of my plane from the angle the spit was coming down. The spit misses and never got a chance to realign for the shot. Humboldt nailed him.
I head for the cv saying we got this, shouting we got this. Then then we did! Wow what a huge relief after that botched attempt. Then the radio was no longer silent. I tell you I could have hugged Humboldt at that moment.
