It must be the people who do traffic control for a job. Then they go home and relax controlling FSX  :rock

Quite a few ATC professionals utilize the VATSIM for training purposes to enhance their real world skill and proficiency.

Out of curiosity, what happens if someone decides to troll and steer traffic into each others. Are collisions modeled and would there be some penalty for the controller?

The VATSIM operates with strict rules and regulations for both pilots and ATC. All real world FAA directives are followed to the letter. Heck, I've had to sit and wait on a tarmac at international airports in there until the ground controllers released me to move to the taxiway. If I tried to move closed to the taxiway entrance I got yelled at and told to remain still. Sometimes it can be annoying. I have never seen or heard of a rogue controller doing what you speak of, but if one did, the VATSIM administrators would ban them for life no doubt.

Can anyone still just take a 747 and go flying around? How is it controlled?

Simple, you can do whatever you like but if you repeated fail to respond to ATC instruction you will find yourself disconnected from the server.

You are not allowed to advance time unless you're flying transatlantic.
You are certainly not allowed to do barrel rolls down the main runway at JFK.

I once got whinged at for straying 200 yards outside an air corridor at 30,000ft.  Mind you, that was my fault for filing a flightplan rather than VFR and only realising I didn't actually have any flight charts for the area when entering the airspace.  So I was guessing at the route from memory and didn't guess quite right.

Way back when some friends and I would fly FS on a westcoast ATC server. 1 thing they offered that was fun was racing, you could do the reno race and several other curcuits. It was awhile ago so I dont recall everything but you installed their plane and picked a skin.  This was done to make it fair,supossedly....

As I said it was fun for awhile and I did get bounced from the server a time or 2 for buzzing airports in choppers, but I was younger then,,,,, :rofl

Heck! Been there. Done that! I've even gotten hollered at for violating Federal Aviation Regulation Sec. 91.117(a). Which is quite easy to do in a Tupolev Tu-22. But they don't want to hear it.  :D
