Jim Garner was a helluva guy. My favorite racing film is Gran Prix and it is so underrated by the masses. Mallory Archer never looked better and there was absolutely no CGI putting Jim behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car at race speed. There was, however, a 200lb 70mm SuperPanavision camera hanging off the side of the car throwing the balance and aero all to hell while he raced open wheel to open wheel on the banking at Monza. The man had some serious driving skills beyond the cool U-Turn named after him.

I really enjoyed watching his work. He had great style, and 'Support your local Sheriff' was a great comedy. My how time fly's.

The Wife and I just watched this movie the night before he passed away.  One of my all time favorites.  A collection of some of the best supporting characters ever assembled.

Grand Prix and The Great Escape were my two favs of his.  Sweetheart loved Maverick.  She'd watch it with her grandfather who loved westerns.

He was Maverick first.

Absolutely. I watched the show and it was one of my favorites back when westerns were a far bigger deal than they are today. That was the real source of my "handle", not the cruze pic.

Paladin was another classic western soap opera as well.

The best tribute about him I read many years ago. It was a critic commenting on one of his movies about to be shown on TV. 'Starring James Garner. Verdict: Well have you ever seen him in a bad movie?'

Rockford remains my longstanding favourite TV series.

Like I said, Bondurant said he was absolutely the real deal. And if you've never seen "Grand Prix", you absolutely have to. The split-screen scenes showing the drivers heel & toe braking is TOO cool.
