Some years ago, AT&T decided to discontinue hosting private websites. They stated that they would continue to host for 6 more months and then shut down the servers. What they actually did was shut down some sites immediately, and the pages were deleted before they could be backed up elsewhere. It was a mistake, and they offered to correct the issue. Started in 1996, I made my last update in 2001. There was a great deal of stuff on the site. I realized that I simply didn't have the time to reconstruct everything, only to have to move it again. So, Planes and Pilots of WWII was down forever.
Or so I thought.
It turns out that the entire site was mirrored by an archiving service. I had no idea. Years went by, and I had pretty much left it behind. Today, I ran a search and up popped one of my old pages. I clicked the main page link. There it was, with every page preserved. I can't add to it, nor am I inclined to bother. But still, it exists... Portions are not well written, but other sections have articles written by combat veterans, worth saving. I was very happy to see those preserved. Truly, what goes on the web, stays on the web.
