For you gun enthusiasts
« on: August 04, 2014, 08:16:04 PM »
I visited a friend who is a gun enthusiast and competes in long-range shooting competitions with rifles that he has designed and built.

Here's one (with various rounds for comparison to the 50 cal he shoots with):

And a picture of me with another of his custom rifles, holding the bolt in my other hand:

Bench rest isn't my cup of tea but they do have some very original purpose built rifles for the game. Those 50's would hurt..... the ears, the shoulder and the pocket book. What's the going rate now for 50 BMG ammo, $4.50 a round? Handloadinhg it would be cheaper but no where as cheap as more conventional rounds like the 06.

Let us know if he lets you pop a couple caps with it.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN

I've never been shooting with him with these guns.  He lives in Michigan, and the closest range to him that allows firing of these guns is in Pennsylvania.  They are mainly for competition shooting at ranges like 1000 yards.  The participants are civilian and military.  He loads his own rounds, so the cost to him is about $1.50 or $2, but you are right -- it is not cost effective compared to regular guns.

That rifle belongs in Star Wars. The stock has a Tie-fighter look to it.

Everything about shooting is awesome. People who have never shot have no conception of the enjoyment of shooting at pure sport.

Starting with spending hours in a garage hand load set up, creating perfect loads for each individual rifle and barrel. No two are the same and the attention to detail needed is extreme. Then there is the "shooting" part. Not just the mechanics of it but being able to drop a round exactly where you want it at extreme ranges is a tremendous discipline.

And we could be talking .22 LRs, handguns, black powder, high power rifle...ect. Its really an exciting and challenging sport.

All the shooting Ive down and Ive never shot a .50 BMG rifle. Dang that just aint right.

That's pretty neat!
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
