Pictures of Veterans - Share Stories
« on: September 30, 2014, 06:43:53 AM »
I would like to share some stories and keep history going with this thread. Share pictures of friends and relatives who were veterans in any war and time period.

I'll start first. My grandpa's name was Warren he was a yeomen aboard the USS Enterprise for Vice Admiral Halsey. He was aboard the aircraft carrier for the Battle of Midway and well after for the rest of the war in the Pacific. After taking staying on some island for awhile he got some sort of fungal disease on his feet. It caused his toes to turn yellow and get really thick. My dad wore his shoes a lot after the war and he got the same thing.I guess my dad still has some small scar of what grandpa left behind in the form of it. As well as other scars grandpa often woke up in the middle of the night thinking he was at general quarters. He passed away in 1999 when I was about 3 years old.

My great grandfather's name was Jacob he served for the Union Army during the Civil War. I don't know all that much about him besides that he lived past the war and raised and big family.

My great-great grandfathers name was Louis if I remember correctly. He was a Lieutenant in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary war. That's about all I know so far, I'll be asking my dad all I can that he knows plus we got some great big 500 page book of my families history so I'll look up on that too.

Lastly my dad is no veteran but all of his friends certainly went into combat and they went to go fight in Vietnam, most of them didn't return. I forget why my dad didn't serve something about going through a loop whole or something. He still has his 1A card that he showed me. Most likely though if he went I wouldn't be here in the first place.

Hope you all liked a little brief in look on my families history. I'm looking forward to reading all of yours.

 :salute

The best stories are the true ones
Ok  just a little bit about my Great gramps

August 4th 1914
on the banks of the river Meuse stood Alponse Josef (   my Great gramps ) alongside his comrades in the Belgian army A.J was in fact a Breton not Belgian and had volunteered so as to stop( or try at least )the Kaiser before his army got any where near his homeland
The early mist from the river obscured the view across the river to less than 100m when endless lines of German troops approached the Belgians
A.J was in the first line of defence when the  Battle started, his unit was some 300 strong and stood his ground in face of overwhelming superior firepower and tactics
The entire unit was killed in that initial attack
A.J was forgotten  by the family  until I visited the Menin gate, Ypres Belguim and discovered my family name amongst the thousands and did a little research
Although I never had the honour of meeting him it is humbling to know one of my predecessors was a true War Hero

This thread top idea ta mate

I have a good friend that works with me that is a Marine and Army vet, who served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Besides Christmas, Veterans day is my favorite day to help out.   :salute
