Tight turning buffs w/drones
« on: September 19, 2014, 07:21:21 AM »
I've witnessed several very good Lanc/bomber pilots who are able to do a tight, quick reversal without losing drones. One of them once said the trick to a tight reversal is chopping throttle and a quick pull back on the stick...almost a hammerhead. Every time I try this I lose one or both drones.  What's the trick? I normally need 8-10 miles of distance with a sustained turn to get back to target.

Chop your throttle and just turn keeping your nose up... Exactly

You can even do loops in B17s and not lose your drones, sometimes it's enough to put multiple attackers off guard long enough to peg one when you recover
The boiling pot is put away and the crab has gone back to sea...

I watched a guy do this one night.  He was flying Lancs super slow, maybe 110 KIAS tops.  Those puppies turned on a dime and were in the gun sight for about 1 second before I went screaming past.

My tight formation turn trick (see: lazy method) - From a defensive gun, chop throttle first and slow down a bit (if you started at a high/cruising speed), when you initiate your turn engage autopilot climb (you can toggle between AP climb and level in gun positions), eventually add throttle gradually to maintain altitude or gain (if I'm slow enough to descend while turning in this state, I notice my drones struggling not to overshoot me).
