I am in the market for a new PC
« on: October 02, 2014, 03:33:19 AM »
I am looking to buy new PC (tower case, monitor not needed) for the upcoming AH update.  My budget is 800.00 usd.   I would like to ask if you guys might know where I can get the best performance for that price.

Build it yourself. That's how you'd get the best bang for the buck. PCPartpicker has a nice builder app for planning your rig: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/. Make a compilation and send it here for evaluation before buying anything.

The second best alternative is to find a reliable local builder shop to tailor the best compilation for you and then build it for a nominal cost. Of course you can use the tool above, get our comments and take the list to the builder shop.

The third cost effective way may be to get a cheap ready built and add what's needed for gaming. Remember, though, that with a ready built you really can't tell about the quality of the components used. Most often they're made to be used as is and adding a gaming level video card will require changing the power supply, which may or may not be wired according the standards.

Yet one point: If you can play AH with your current rig without problems, don't haste with the upgrade. No one really knows what the upcoming update will require, not even the HTC folks! All that is known at the moment is that HiTech is using a mediocre rig for coading and testing, so presumably if your current rig can run high details at 60 FPS the update might well be playable with it.

I don't have the time to build a new system.  The minimum I was hoping to do was transfer files to the new PC once FED Ex delivers it to the door.  As for my old PC...  I can barely run 40 - 80 FPS now with every turned down...  It's 8 years old and time for this old machine to retire.  It's held up well. :old:

Alright, good to know where you're starting from. In that case the second suggestion would probably give you the most reliable rig with minimal efforts. They might even transfer your files which is something that no mail order company would do. Support the local guy, if he isn't up to his task you can revisit him with a baseball bat...

Another thing to try would be keeping an eye on NewEgg shell-shocker deals: http://www.newegg.com/

No matter what it says, click on it, and it'll show you the upcoming deals for the day.  If you see something that looks good (make sure the GFX card is decent) then just set yourself an alarm for when it goes live (times are in PDT) and then check the pricing.
