USB headset.
« on: October 01, 2014, 01:49:02 AM »
The current headset I use plugs into a USB port, unlike my old set that used mini plugs. When I plug the USB set in,my external speakers shut off. I'm using a 300 watt subwoofer and I really like having it on while flying. Is there any way to get the computer to not turn off my external sound when I plug in the headset?

Apparently what's happening is this: The USB headset has a built-in sound card while your speakers are connected to the motherboard's sound circuit. When plugging the USB set in, it automatically takes the role of a primary sound system, thus muting your speakers.

Happy news! You can select your devices in Aces High: Open your Clipboard, choose Options-> Preferences-> Game Sounds. Most probably all of the four slots will say something like "Windows default". Now choose the USB device (maybe the brand of your headset) in the Headset drop-down menu and the motherboard sound circuit (often Realtek) in the Speakers menu. Click OK and that should do it.

Go into your Windows Sound properties (Control Panel -> Sound) and right click on the listing for the USB headset and set that to "Default Communication Device" and then right click on the listing for your sound card and select "Default Device".  This will allow you to use both your USB headset and sound card in Windows.

In Aces High, you'll need to follow Bizman's instructions.  One small note, you can set the sound in AH so that your headset receives vox while your sound card does game sounds.
