The only difference between a powered hub and an internal hub is powered hub does not draw current from your computer's power supply.

I had to get one when I found myself 1 device beyond psu capacity.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

I use Belkin powered hubs, they are damn reliable. Currently, I'm using these two.

This one is nice because it also has a 4 piece hub you can remove and take with you for travel.

A powered hub should be straight up handling what you need to connect it too, I choose a 4 port Belkin with Mucho ampere capability.
I had a low-end powered hub, and I could only have one usb hard drive connected to it (and stick/rudder pedals).
My ammo last for 6 Lancasters, or one Yak3.

I use one.  I got it when my joystick and pedals started to act twitchy, and it cured that.  Likely they were drawing more power than the motherboard USB ports could reliably provide.

Stick, throttle, foot pedals, TrackIR5, ROCCAT KAVE headset, flatbed scanner & printer all plugged into a 7 port Belkin hub and everything runs fine on my 7 year old Dell XPS 400.  :old:
