Some Useful Free Software
« on: February 15, 2015, 10:37:20 PM »
These programs were recommended for users by Carey Holzman, during a Dec 2014 presentation.  Here is the link to that presentation.  Carey Holzman-2014
It's 01:17:46 minutes long, but has some pretty good info.

The following programs are some that he mentions, along with the start-time at which he talks about them.
I'm sure some folks are familiar with them.

1. Unchecky  Sometimes when installing something like Adobe Flash Player, other offers try and sneak in the mix.  McAffe is an example of such a program.
This program will uncheck other software offers for you automatically, so you end up just installing what you want.  @32:43 min.

2. W.O.T. (Web of Trust)  An addon for your browser.  This program gives you a heads up of links that may or may not be safe,
based on other users recommendations.  @47:38 min.

3. J.R.T. (Junkware Removal Tool)  Name says it all.  @52.24 min.

4. AdwCleaner  Adware cleaner.  @53.37 min.

These are all free programs.  Hope they can help somebody.

Good info! Unchecky is new to me, but I've developed a habit of doing a custom install of any software anyways.

A little note of caution: Although Bleepingcomputer.com is a very reliable source for tools and advise fighting malware, their site is full of adverts for less safe programs! Adblock Plus is an add-on that prevents ads from showing and thus also minimizes the risk of accidentally clicking a misleading link.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

I really like Adblock Plus.  It's real handy when watching YouTube videos.   :aok
