That reminds me of the inconvenience of the WW1 pilots: Not only did their planes lack all sorts of conveniences and safety equipment of later planes, they also leaked castor oil (used for engine lubrication) fumes to the amount that the pilots' outfits were soaked with oil. Had the fumes stayed on the outside there would have been even some sort of benefit in impregnating the clothing wind and rain proof. But alas, the pilots also inhaled and swallowed the partially burned castor oil which caused the inevitable dirty pants effect.
