Exhaust Flames
« on: March 23, 2015, 01:42:30 PM »
Was it known back then that if some planes pushed enough power into their engines that little plumes of fire can be seen out of the exhaust pipes? I could only think of this due to some memory of P-40s in the Chinese theater doing night missions engaging Japanese bombers.

Our mossies actually had suppressors so that wouldn't happen during night missions.

Here is a video of the exhaust flame from a B-17.  This was taken maybe 20-30 minutes before sunset off the east coast of Florida. Photo plane is an L-39.

I have seen on u-tube some of the IL-2 fightring scenes (from the same game) and they showed the flame of the exhaust if it was on the dark side of the plane or if it was getting dark in the sky. It made a nice addition to the game. I like it. +1
