colored ranging smoke

Hello everyone, While watching the history channel the other night about the naval battles in the pacific,crew members of one of our destroyers started explaining that ships of the japanese  fleet would first shoot colored ranging smoke at the enemy to help determine distance before shooting at them.does anyone think that having such a setup in the game would be of any use?

The Japanese weren't the only ones, colored dye was used by all naval forces to mark their rounds.

You have Ctrl_Q for the sea mode ranging aiming ladder. Then you need to know the max range for the 5inch is 16,000yds while for the 8inch is 32,000yds. Just keep track of your round tracer during ranging until you get the impact flash and pour it in. Mapping zoom and the in\out keys is your friend during the ranging process. You will end up leading for the 5inch 2x the distance you lead with the 8inch past 9k yards.

I would like colored explosives in circumstances where you have a lot of people manning guns and shooting, with splashes all around near where you are aiming, making it hard to distinguish your splash from others.

  I believe either the "sailor(s)" interviewed for that documentary were incorrect or the original poster misinterpreted what they said. Those were not colored smoke rounds, but were shells that contained a colored dye. With multiple friendly
ships often targeting the same enemy ship, the use of different colored dye rounds enabled the gunners/fire control
officers to determine where -their- round(s) were falling.
  If they had used "colored smoke" rounds, the resultant obscuration would not be useful.
