RS-82 with time delayed fuses
« on: July 22, 2015, 01:27:53 AM »
RS-82 were used in air-to-air role similarly to R4M later by Luftwaffe.

The fuses could be configured on the ground for delay of 2 to 22 seconds with precision of 0.2s and than fired in salvos against bomber formations. They were used for the first time at Khalkhin Gol and were used during WW2.

In one interesting case a pair of MiG-3 armed with RS-82 were in the merge with a group 6 109s. It was typical merge on head on course. The section leader didn't fired rockets but the young wing-man decided on his own to fire and did it on time. 4 out of 6 109s were destroyed. Of course it was more luck than anything else but RS-82 were indeed effective in breaking bomber formations.

There lots of resources about it also most of it in Russian regarding Soviet air-to-air rockets

Yep, would be nice to see.

There's a large amounts of anecdotes from Finnish fighter pilot veterans where the Soviets used them in fighter vs fighter combat as well quite frequently during certain time frames.
