Why the change to Windows 10, 8.1 is not really all that old.  I am confused.

Windows 8 has done very poorly in the marketplace.  Much like Vista, Microsoft did not wait very long to replace it with Windows 7 due to how poor Vista did in the marketplace.

All about marketing , basically ? I hated Vista, loved XP and I like 7. Not thrilled with Windows 8 on my laptop.

It came as an update on Windows 7 and higher. I have 7 and got it. It installs a program that puts a little icon on the task bar that lets you reserve your copy. It annoyed me so I uninstalled it.

My laptop with windows 7 32 home premium did not get an upgrade message. Never bothered to figure out why because I don't want to upgrade the laptop anyway. I suspect something hardware-wise didn't qualify since it's 10 years old.

I think it is an optional update.  If you have automatic updates enabled, you got the update.  If you just grab every update Microsoft issues, you got the update.

I do not have the update as I never let them install it, so I am not getting the icon either.

It is but it doesn't identify itself as that only as a general update so if you didn't know what that particular update did you'd get it. I Googled it. Uninstalled and hid that update so it doesn't come back. I forget the kb# but I have it on a post-it @home.
